Scunthorpe loanee loving his time at the club...
Left-back Scott Laird is loving his time with the Saddlers and admits it has “reignited my fire”.
The 28-year-old has scored one goal in nine appearances for Walsall since arriving on loan from Scunthorpe in August, and is now an integral part of Jon Whitney’s starting line-up.
“I’ve been taking it game by game and I’ve been loving it,” said the former Preston defender.
“The fans have taken to me really well and I can’t thank them enough.
“It’s reignited my fire. I love playing football again and that’s something I want to continue.”
Erhun Oztumer inspired the Saddlers to a 2-0 victory at Swindon last weekend – our first away win of the campaign – and Laird was delighted with his side’s performance.
“That is the benchmark,” he added. “Even out of possession we controlled the game at Swindon.
“We set traps and controlled where they were passing the ball because our shape and discipline was excellent.
“Then when we got on the ball, we used it really well and kept possession really well.
“Swindon was our third clean sheet of the season but we need more because we are determined to keep climbing the table and be successful.”
Laird will be hoping for a repeat performance this afternoon when Walsall host resurgent Coventry.
“We’re in a really good place at the moment and as a team we can’t wait for Saturday,” he added.
“The fans are enjoying it, the media are enjoying it – the questions are a bit easier – and the boys are loving it.
“Coventry are a good side; they’ve got a very good squad. They won’t be where they are come the end of the season, they’ll be up and around it.
“They’ve had a few positive results recently, but they’re going to come to us and we’ll need to be at our best like we have been the last month or so to come out with a positive result.”
