EDWARDS: GREAT TO PLAY AGAIN

8 October 2016

Ex-Colchester man helped Walsall see off Sheff Utd...

Joe Edwards was delighted to be back in the Saddlers’ starting line-up for the 2-1 victory over Sheffield United in the Checkatrade Trophy.

The 25-year-old missed Walsall’s previous three matches through suspension after being sent off for an elbow in the 1-0 win over Bolton in mid-September.

And after a few weeks waiting patiently on the sidelines, the ex-Yeovil and Colchester man was thrilled to get back out on the pitch and help his team record a positive result.

“It was great to be back,” said Edwards. “It was horrible not to be playing.

“I thought we deserved the victory, our shape was brilliant throughout, we pressed when we needed to and defended well when we had to. It was a very good display.

“It’s nice to get through [to the second round] with a game to spare. There has been a lot said about this competition but we were delighted to get through and we could see how disappointed Sheffield United were to lose the game.

“The end goal is a game at Wembley and that can’t be bad.”

After back-to-back 2-1 wins, Edwards is hoping Walsall can maintain their recent form against local rivals Shrewsbury a week today.

“It’s about momentum in this league and if you can put wins together that’s great going into the Shrewsbury game,” he added.

“You don’t want to be waiting around [during the international break] on the back of two losses. We are raring to go for a big game against Shrewsbury.”
