WHITNEY LOOKS AHEAD TO BLADES CLASH

29 November 2016

Boss hoping for Bramall Lane repeat...

Jon Whitney believes last month’s Checkatrade Trophy victory over Sheffield United could give his side a psychological boost ahead of tonight’s league fixture against the Blades.

Scott Laird and Amadou Bakayoko scored the goals in a 2-1 Trophy success at Bramall Lane when the sides last met at the start of October.

The Saddlers face Sheffield United again this evening in what is our game in hand – and Whitney is hopeful of a repeat result.

“They’re a good team and they are 15 unbeaten now [in the league] but over the last two months we’ve been the only team to beat them,” said the 45-year-old.

“I know it was in the Checkatrade Trophy but they still had some of the players who will probably be playing tonight.

“Psychologically that’s important for my players as we’ve already been there and beaten them. It was a really good performance and we’ll be looking for the same.

“It’ll be a very difficult task but it’s one I’m relishing and I’m sure my players will be as well.

“We’re wary of their threat and they’re on a great run. Chris [Wilder] demands a lot and he is pushing the club forward.

“But it’s a great game for us. I don’t think there’s any expectancy, but there is within this club. I’m quietly confident we can cause them a few problems.”
