ST THOMAS MORE REPORTER: WALSALL 1-2 GILLINGHAM

21 November 2016

Mandip Virk's match report...

Walsall were ‘punished again’ because of a lack of discipline after Gillingham claimed victory with the 2-1 loss on Saturday.

The loss made Walsall fall to 17th in the league table and Gillingham 15th.

Walsall’s response to Gillingham’s early goal in the second minute made by Cody Mcdonald was very encouraging.

Walsall’s strategy after half time was exceptional however they were unable to score a goal. The team had ‘some good chances’ but didn’t take them explained manager Whitney - but he added that the performance was what he asked for.

Jason McCarthy scored for Walsall with his right footed equaliser making it 1-1. Gillingham managed to pull ahead after half time on the eighty third minute with a free kick taken by Cody Mcdonald changing it to 2-1.

Max Ehmer (Gillingham) was shown a yellow card for unsporting behaviour

In the eighty fifth minute Florent Cuveliar was substituted by Franck Moussa, followed by Joe Edwards coming off and being replaced by Amadou Bakayoko

Manager Jon Whitney said he took full responsibility for the final score. "I don't blame the players and I am optimistic for the match on Tuesday," he said.
