1988 REUNION RAISES £1,000 FOR CLUB'S ACADEMY

25 November 2016

Return of the '88 Boys event last Friday...

We are pleased to announce that the ‘Return of the ’88 Boys’ event raised £1,000 for the club’s academy.

Under Tommy Coakley, the Saddlers won promotion from the Old Division Three via the play-offs in 1987/88, in what was also the club’s centenary year.

Members of that famous team, including David Kelly, Kenny Mower and Graham Forbes, returned for last Friday’s reunion.

The ’88 boys recalled their favourite memories and funniest stories from the season to a crowd of 170 in the Bonser Suite – and an enjoyable evening was had by all.

At the end of the night, we auctioned off several items of 1988 and football-related memorabilia - with the profit, totalling £1,000, going to the club’s highly-acclaimed academy.

We also raised £130 for the ‘Smile for Joel’ charity – set up in memory of Tunisia terror victim Joel Richards – through the sale of a unique, autographed ball.

Wayne Thomas, Walsall’s Commercial Manager, said: “It was a great occasion that was really well supported by the fans. “From the feedback I received, those who attended the evening thoroughly enjoyed it.

“There were some fantastic stories from yesteryear and it made me appreciate even more just what an iconic group of players the ‘88 squad truly were.

“I was thrilled that we also raised a significant amount of money that will be invested directly back into our academy, which is the lifeblood of the club.

“We also supported the ‘Smile for Joel’ charity, raising £130 through the sale of a unique 1988 ball, which was sold to Bailey & Mackey Ltd.

“As a club, I will be looking to host one of these events each season, and we already have some great plans for the next one!”
