WALSALL TO FACE BARNSLEY IN THE PLAY-OFFS

8 May 2016

The Saddlers to play the Tykes...

Walsall are to face Barnsley in a two-legged play-off semi-final after finishing the League One campaign in a hugely creditable third place.

The Saddlers needed to beat Port Vale earlier this afternoon and hope Burton lost at Doncaster to secure automatic promotion.

Jon Whitney’s men fulfilled their part of the bargain, thrashing Vale 5-0 thanks to goals from Paul Downing, Tom Bradshaw, Sam Mantom and a brace from Anthony Forde.

However, a goalless draw for Burton was enough for Nigel Clough’s side to finish as runners-up, one point and one place ahead of the Saddlers.

Walsall must now prepare for a play-off meeting with Barnsley, who came sixth, ahead of seventh-placed Scunthorpe on goal difference.

The first leg will take place at Oakwell this Saturday, 14th May (kick-off 5.30pm) with the return leg on Thursday, 19th May (kick-off 7.45pm).
