BOXING: McLAREN PLEASED WITH PROGRESS

13 May 2016

May-Hem event tomorrow...

Stoke super lightweight, Kieron McLaren, is pleased with the progress he has made since turning professional in 2014.

The 22 year-old, whose cousin Josh is also a professional boxer, has fought seven times to date, barely dropping a round. He will be hoping to make it 8-0 this weekend when he appearS on Hatton Promotions and Black Country Boxing’s co-promotion ‘May-Hem’. The show is sponsored by Grosvenor Casino Walsall.

“I think I have progressed well,” he said. “I have improved in my power and the timing of my shots. We are working on this aspect. I’d like a KO on my record but if it comes, it comes.

“We are looking for a belt in 2016 but I leave all that up to my manager and I'm just taking everything as it comes.”

‘Gunner’ takes on entertaining road warrior, Michael Mooney, at Walsall FC’s Banks’s Stadium. The Mad Man is quite a character but is also a dangerous opponent on his day and one McLaren will give the utmost respect to.

“He is a character and I know he brings entertainment,” added McLaren. “He’s been in with some good fighters and has a few decent wins on his record, so I’ll respect him. That said he’s just another human being with two arms and two legs, so we will see what happens on the night!”

McLaren is one of six fighters in action alongside Ricky Hatton trained duo, Sam Evans and Nathan Gorman. Evans takes on Bulgaria’s Teodor Stefanov whilst Nantwich heavyweight Gorman steps in with Poland’s Kamil Sokolowski.

Two-time British title challenger Jason Welborn, fresh from his 56-second stoppage of Michal Vosyka last month, takes on Atherton road warrior, William Warburton whilst his stablemate, Walsall’s former British Lightweight Champion, Martin Gethin, steps up to super lightweight to take on Newark’s Fonz Alexander.

Former kickboxing world champion, Chad ‘2 Slick’ Sugden, completes the card. ‘2 Slick’ takes on Lithuania’s Vaidas Balciauskas looking to build on his impressive debut victory in March.

The weigh-in and after-show party will take place at Grosvenor Casino Walsall, Bentley Mill Way, Walsall WS2 0LE (just off junction 10 of the M6). The weigh-in takes place at 1.00pm tomorrow (Friday).

Jason Welborn vs. William Warburton, Sam Evans vs. Teodor Stefanov and Chad Sugden vs. Vaidas Balciauskas will all weigh-in and will be available for interviews and photographs.

On fight night, Yellow Taxi’s will provide a number of free taxi’s to take fight fans from Walsall FC to the Casino on the night. Find out more about Grosvenor Casino Walsall here: www.grosvenorcasinos.com/local-casinos/walsall
