The Saddlers are eyeing promotion...
Interim head coach Jon Whitney says Walsall have an opportunity to achieve something “really special” this season. The Saddlers are fourth in League One, five points off the automatic promotion places, with a game in hand.
And Whitney has told his players to relish the challenge of trying to win promotion.
“People look at our position in different ways,” said the 45-year-old.
“I’m not on the band wagon of ‘we would have taken this at the start of the season’. You can keep saying that but then you become a bit complacent. I’m not accepting that.
“We’re in a great situation, which we can build from in a 12-game mini season. It’s an opportunity for us to achieve something really special. We can’t freeze with that, we’ve got to soak it up.
“We talk about players being anxious, I always find you’re anxious if you don’t know what you’re doing or if you’re asked to do something you can’t do.
“But we’ve got the skillset, as players and staff, to cope with this expectation. The only expectation is what we put on ourselves.
“We expect to try and perform and if we can get our performances consistent, like we have all year, we’ll see where it takes us.”
