Interim head coach praises Walsall's work ethic...

Jon Whitney has hailed the current Walsall squad as “the best group I’ve worked with”.

The Saddlers are fourth in League One, just five points off the automatic promotion places, with a game in hand.

And Whitney, whose first match as interim head coach is against Chesterfield tomorrow, has heaped praise on his squad and outlined the qualities he is looking for from his players.

“I’ve said it before but this is the best group I’ve worked with,” said Whitney.

“We’ve got a fantastic work ethic, great application. There are no energy sappers – in the past there have been.

“When I wanted to be a footballer it was an absolute dream - it was all I thought about.

“I think football has lost that concept. It’s become too commercialised and money driven. But I want my players to have that fire in the belly that I’ve got.

“I don’t want them to just to have the title of professional footballer because that means nothing, but to have a career as a professional footballer - that’s what it means.

“You look at Adam Chambers and James O’Connor, they’ve got that longevity because of their habits, work ethic, desire and burning passion to be the best they can be.

“That’s what I want from my players. If I’m going to be here long term, that’s the ethos and the values I hold dear to me.”
