Defender pens new one-year deal...
Walsall FC are delighted to announce that promising young centre-back Matt Preston has signed a one-year extension to his existing deal.The 21-year-old, who scored the Saddlers’ winning goal in our dramatic 2-1 victory over Colchester on Saturday, will remain at the Banks’s Stadium until the summer of 2017.
“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract as this is the best place for me to be at the minute,” said Preston.
“Here young players are given an opportunity to play which at most clubs is a rare thing. I’m starting to break through so hopefully I can continue to do that.
“I’m hoping to play as much first-team football as I can and stay injury free. To play regularly is my main aim.”
A product of the Club’s youth system, the Birmingham-born defender captained Walsall’s youth team and was named the 2012/13 Apprentice of the Season.
Preston penned his first professional contract in January 2013 before moving on loan to Northern Premier League outfit Barwell.
He made his Saddlers debut as a late substitute in a 3-2 victory over Rochdale in February 2015, and was handed his first senior start against Morecambe in the JPT earlier this season.
Preston, who netted his first career goal in our 2-1 reverse against Chesterfield in October, has scored twice in 13 league and cup appearances for Walsall this term.
