DEVELOPMENT SQUAD: WARD HAILS ‘EXCELLENT’ FIRST-HALF DISPLAY

30 March 2016

Walsall run out comfortable winners against Morecambe...

Professional Development Coach John Ward praised his side’s “excellent” first-half performance after Walsall eased to a 3-0 victory over Morecambe.

The Saddlers flew out of the traps and raced into a three-goal half-time lead, courtesy of Levi Rowley’s lob and headers from Kory Roberts and Will Shorrock.

Ward’s men were rarely troubled defensively and could have won more convincingly, with Rowley twice hitting the woodwork and substitute Nathan Owen also clipping the bar.

“I thought they did really well,” said Ward afterwards.

“We had a nice mix of young players with some out of the youth team and four or five of the first-year pro boys who hadn’t had a game for three or four weeks. I was really pleased with them.

“We spoke about starting the game quickly. When we played Morecambe about three weeks ago, we had a really slow start and found ourselves 2-0 down.

“But this time we started the quicker and our first-half display was excellent.

“We hit the woodwork a few times as well which just showed that we were playing on the front foot and trying to add to what we’d got.

“The second half was a bit tighter but it was still a really good win for us.”
