Ahead of this weekend’s match against Chesterfield, we take a look back at the Saddlers’ last five matches against the Spireites…15th December 2015 – Walsall 0-0 Chesterfield (5-3 pens) – FA Cup Second-Round Replay
Walsall booked an FA Cup third-round trip to former manager Dean Smith's Brentford after beating Chesterfield on penalties. Chances were at a premium in a tense 120 minutes, with Kieron Morris going closest for the Saddlers when he rattled the bar. In the shoot-out, Walsall converted all five spot-kicks, with Paul Downing scoring the winning penalty after Sam Morsy had fired over.
5th December 2015 – Chesterfield 1-1 Walsall – FA Cup Second Round
Walsall were forced to settle for an FA Cup second-round replay after being held by League One rivals Chesterfield at a wind-swept Proact Stadium. The Saddlers took a first-half lead when Jason Demetriou’s cross deflected in off Spireites defender Richard Wood. But Chesterfield improved after the break, with captain Sam Morsy bundling home an 89th-minute equaliser to force a replay.
17th October 2015 - Walsall 1-2 Chesterfield – League One
The Saddlers were knocked off top spot after losing at home to Chesterfield. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake’s early header put the Spireites ahead before Ian Evatt converted Dan Gardner's corner to make it 2-0 on 54 minutes. Matt Preston pulled a goal back in stoppage time, but Chesterfield held on to condemn the Saddlers to a first defeat in seven league matches.
28th March 2015 – Chesterfield 1-0 Walsall – League One
Sam Hird’s late header gave play-off chasing Chesterfield a hard-fought win. The former Doncaster defender rose highest to head home Jimmy Ryan’s corner at the far post with just four minutes remaining. James Chambers went closest for the Saddlers when his looping header was tipped on to the bar by Spireites stopper Tommy Lee.
25th October 2014 – Walsall 1-0 Chesterfield – League One
Tom Bradshaw scored the only goal as Walsall climbed out of the relegation zone with victory over Paul Cook’s Chesterfield. The striker, who was making his return from a hamstring injury, lifted a left-footed shot over keeper Tommy Lee for his sixth goal of the season on 61 minutes. Sam Clucas and Gary Roberts each threatened for Chesterfield late on.
