COVENTRY VS. WALSALL: RECENT MEETINGS

12 January 2016

Walsall beat Coventry 2-1 back in August...

Ahead of our trip to Coventry this evening, we take a look back at the Saddlers' last six matches against the Sky Blues...

22nd August 2015 – Walsall 2-1 Coventry – League One
Goals either side of half-time from Anthony Forde and Tom Bradshaw gave Walsall a pulsating victory over Midlands rivals Coventry. Forde’s cool finish opened the scoring on 40 minutes, and Bradshaw volleyed home the Saddlers’ second shortly after the break. Jacob Murphy’s sublime strike gave Coventry hope but Walsall held on for a fourth successive win in all competitions.

3rd January 2015 – Walsall 0-2 Coventry – League One
The Saddlers began 2015 with a disappointing defeat at home to Steven Pressley’s Coventry. Marcus Tudgay saw an early penalty saved by home keeper Richard O’Donnell, but the Sky Blues went ahead moments later through Jim O’Brien’s 30-yard screamer. Walsall improved after the break, with Anthony Forde and Michael Cain each ratting the woodwork, but Tudgay’s late header sealed Coventry’s win.

29th November 2014 – Coventry 0-0 Walsall – League One
Walsall extended their unbeaten run to five league matches after playing out a goalless draw at Coventry. Saddlers stopper Richard O’Donnell made a fine flying save to keep out Jim O’Brien’s stooping header in a quiet first-half. After the break, home keeper Ryan Allsop denied Romaine Sawyers, while O’Donnell kept out Gary Madine’s audacious 40-yard lob.

5th March 2014 – Coventry 2-1 Walsall – League One
Substitute Nathan Delfouneso’s late winner condemned Walsall to a third consecutive 2-1 defeat. Callum Wilson slotted Coventry ahead midway through the first-half, before Mal Benning’s tap-in – his first Saddlers goal – drew Walsall level shortly after the interval. But Aston Villa loanee Delfouneso earned Coventry victory when he fired home from close-range, six minutes from time.

26th October 2013 – Walsall 0-1 Coventry – League One
Franck Moussa scored the only goal to earn in-form Coventry all three points. Craig Westcarr went closest to breaking the first-half deadlock when his 20-yard free-kick was tipped onto the post by visiting keeper Joe Murphy. But the Sky Blues secured victory on 54 minutes, Westcarr slotting in after Walsall custodian Richard O’Donnell had saved Leon Clarke’s header.

1st April 2013 – Walsall 4-0 Coventry – League One
Jamie Paterson and Craig Westcarr each scored twice as Walsall thrashed 10-man Coventry. The Saddlers took a 33rd-minute lead when Paterson, a lifelong Sky Blues supporter, fired a low angled drive into the corner. Westcarr’s penalty made it 2-0, before Coventry’s Jordan Stewart was sent off for two bookable offences. Westcarr headed home Walsall’s third on 74 minutes and Paterson's calm finish completed the rout late on.
