ST THOMAS MORE REPORTER: MATTHEW APLIN'S MATCH REPORT

11 February 2016

Report on Walsall 3-0 home defeat to Millwall...

The match Walsall VS Millwall with the main goal keeper Neil Etheridge out injured. Can Liam Roberts perform on his debut in shocking conditions?

The first half was an even game with Walsall having the better chances and most of the possession. Liam Roberts making a great save in the 35th minute which should have been a goal. Saving with his left foot that was going bottom right of the goal.

And there was another save from Liam Roberts up close in the 42nd minute. Two minutes later Anthony Forde came close with a strike which hit the crossbar from around 25 yards out.

Walsall had determination to keep possession in the first half but the second half was a totally different story.

The first major blow for Walsall, was Tom Bradshaw coming off injured in the 50 minute and his replacement was Jordan Cook.

The second half proved to be more difficult for Walsall, As Millwall scored in the 61st minute, Lee Gregory putting the visitors ahead, which was a shame as Walsall had a chance but Millwall hit on the counter and from six-yards out for Gregory he wasn’t going to miss.

Sawyers did however have a great chance in the 64th minute by chesting the ball from a Demetriou cross and shooting at goal only for it to be blocked by Millwall’s new right back Romeo.

In the 70th minute the new right back scored for Millwall with a blazing run down the right wing and finishing it into the far corner.

This wasn’t Walsall’s day however with a third goal for Millwall from their top goal scorer Lee Gregory in the 77th minute from another counter attack and slicing it home.

There was a chance for Walsall in the 78th minute from Milan Lalkovic on the left side but their goal keeper saved it and Walsall ended in defeat.

After the game Lee Gregory gave his opinion on the match he said “Liam Roberts did well for his debut” he then went on to say “the rain didn’t help both teams” while Millwall did win 3 nil Liam Roberts did play well especially the first half with countless saves.

This included Sean O Driscoll giving his viewpoints by saying “a debut in weather like this is hard and Liam Roberts is the future of the club” he also said he was disappointed by the result.

With this Walsall are still second in the league but with Wigan and Gillingham catching up the away trip to Crewe may be a match with nerves and mistakes.
