CHAMBERS: FIRST GOAL WAS CRUCIAL

1 February 2016

The Saddlers suffer FA Cup exit...

Captain Adam Chambers felt the first goal was crucial in Walsall’s FA Cup fourth-round defeat at Reading.

Despite enjoying plenty of possession and going close through Tom Bradshaw, the Saddlers fell behind to Hal Robson-Kanu’s 37th-minute opener.

And Reading never looked back, with Matej Vydra’s brace and Danny Williams’ breakaway goal sealing a comprehensive 4-0 win.

The result ended Walsall’s hopes of reaching the FA Cup fifth round for the first time in 13 years.

“The first goal was always going to be important and it changed the game,” said Chambers afterwards.

“It gave them a lot more confidence and made it a difficult task for us to get back in the game.

“Up until then, we were doing well and holding our own, we had a few chances and things were going to plan. But the first goal was key.

“We’re disappointed with the result and it was a big learning curve for us.

“We didn’t really do ourselves justice or perform to our potential, but it’s one of those things and we’ve got to put it behind us and focus on the next game.”

Attention now turns to tomorrow night’s rearranged League One match against Darren Ferguson’s Doncaster at the Keepmoat Stadium.

“It’s going to be a big game for us to try to get back to winning ways and put in a good performance,” said Chambers.

“Results went our way on Saturday but it’s down to us and what we do.

“The focus is promotion. We’ve had a good first half of the season and we want to replicate that in the second half.

“There’s a long way to go and we need to get some momentum and go on a good run now in the league. Tuesday night will hopefully be the start of it.”
