MEMORABLE MATCH: WALSALL 3-1 FLEETWOOD

9 December 2016

Saddlers ensure final day drama with comfortable home win...

We will be looking to extend our unbeaten run against Fleetwood to eight games when we travel to Highbury on Saturday.

Having never tasted defeat at the hands of the Cod Army, Jon Whitney’s side will be hoping to build on the 1-0 victory against Sheff Utd at Bramall Lane ten days ago and generate some momentum heading into the busy Christmas period.

Just three points separate ten teams in League One and a victory on the Fylde coast would put the Saddlers level on points with eighth-placed Fleetwood.

Ahead of the game, we take a look back at our televised memorable match on 2nd May which kept the Saddlers firmly in the promotion race.

Knowing that nothing other than a win would keep our automatic promotion hopes alive, we dominated from the off.

It took just two minutes for Tom Bradshaw to turn in his 19th goal of the season when Jason Demetriou’s cross fell perfectly into the path of the Saddlers number nine, much to the joy of Jon Whitney on the sideline.

It was 2-0 inside 20 minutes when Paul Downing emphatically volleyed home Anthony Forde’s cross and the Saddlers were running away with it.

Forde then came close himself with a dipping free-kick before Bradshaw’s header flew inches wide of the post.

Romaine Sawyers ensured the win in the second half, drilling into the far corner after some good build-up play.

Devante Cole pulled one back late on but it was nothing more than a consolation as we took our campaign to the final day of the League One season.
