COMMUNITY: KINGSMEAD WIN THE GIRLS CUP

16 December 2016

A chance to play at Wembley Stadium...

Kingsmead School will represent Walsall FC in the Girls Cup after winning our local competition on Monday.

Shire Oak Academy, Shelfield Community Academy and Cardinal Griffin Catholic College also took part in the competition, run by Walsall FC Community Programme, on the club’s new artificial pitch.

After both winning their first two matches, Kingsmead and Shire Oak faced off in a tight deciding game.

There was some good football played and, although Shire Oak twice hit the post, Kingsmead scored late on to wrap up a narrow 1-0 victory.

They now head to the area finals hosted by Wolves next month, where they will compete against teams representing other local EFL clubs.

Area winners move on to the regional event and the two regional winners will play in the grand final at Wembley Stadium, prior to the Checkatrade Trophy final in April.

Anna Wilcox, Female Football Development Officer at Walsall FC Community Programme, said: "The Girls Cup was a great occasion with some good football on show.

"It's fantastic that all EFL clubs are backing this competition, and hopefully we can inspire the next generation of women's footballers."
