WHITNEY: WE MUST LEARN FROM YEOVIL DEFEAT

10 August 2016

Saddlers beaten by League Two Glovers...

Jon Whitney says his Walsall team must learn from Tuesday’s EFL Cup first-round defeat to League Two Yeovil.

An Amadou Bakayoko own goal and a 70-yard Matthew Dolan wonder strike earned the Glovers a 2-0 victory after extra time.

It was a disappointing night for the Saddlers, who were unable to build on Saturday’s opening-day win over Wimbledon, and Whitney says we must move on quickly.

“We said at half-time that it would be one lack of discipline that would cost either team as it was a really close encounter,” said Whitney.

“That’s what cost us the free-kick. We switched off - I thought we were ball watching a little bit - and they had two at the back stick.

“A little bit of ill-discipline has cost us but there will be opportunities for us to learn from it, because we have to get better.

“But we didn’t get too carried away after beating Wimbledon and we won’t get too down with this result either, and I’ve said that to the players. We have to learn from it and move on.

“We’ll pick ourselves up, analyse the game and move on to the weekend.”
