WALSALL VS. SOUTHEND: RECENT MEETINGS

15 April 2016

A comfortable 2-0 win at Roots Hall back in August…

Ahead of tomorrow’s match against Southend, we take a look back at the Saddlers’ last five matches against the Shrimpers…

15th August 2015 – Southend 0-2 Walsall – League One

Goals from Tom Bradshaw and Sam Mantom earned Walsall a comfortable win at Southend. Bradshaw’s low left-footed strike gave the Saddlers an eighth-minute lead before Mantom fired home our second goal shortly after half-time. Southend’s David Worrall had an effort cleared off the line, while James Baxendale and Jordan Cook each went close to increasing Walsall’s advantage. It was the Saddlers’ first league victory of the 2015/16 season.

12th August 2014 – Southend 1-2 Walsall – Capital One Cup
Substitute Kieron Morris’ late winner sealed Walsall’s passage through to the Capital One Cup second round at the expensive of League Two Southend. Malvind Benning’s close-range finish put Dean Smith’s side in front on 25 minutes. Tom Bradshaw had a goal disallowed for offside before Ryan Leonard equalised with a deflected long-range strike midway through the second half. The tie looked set for extra time until Morris fired home from 20-yards with three minutes remaining.

23rd March 2010 – Southend 3-0 Walsall – League One
Struggling Southend eased past ten-man Walsall to bolster their survival chances. The Shrimpers went ahead through Franck Moussa’s 19th-minute volley, before the Saddlers’ Clayton McDonald was sent off for a professional foul. Scott Spencer headed home Southend’s second goal just after the break and Moussa rounded off their first win in 12 matches with a late header.

15th August 2009 - Walsall 2-2 Southend – League One
Sam Parkin’s stoppage-time spot-kick preserved ten-man Walsall’s unbeaten start to the 2009/10 campaign. Steve Jones nodded the hosts into an 11th-minute lead from Darryl Westlake’s free-kick, only for Dwayne Mattis to see red for two bookable offences. Lee Barnard equalised on 66 minutes and Dougie Freedman headed Southend 2-1 in front, but Parkin’s last-gasp penalty salvaged Walsall a draw.

7th March 2009 – Southend 2-0 Walsall – League One
Second-half goals from Kevin Betsy and Theo Robinson helped Southend see off Walsall, who again were reduced to ten men. The Saddlers faced an uphill struggle from the moment Michael Ricketts was dismissed for violent conduct on 14 minutes. The home side went ahead five minutes into the second period when Betsy fired into the corner from 18 yards, before Robinson made sure of the win with an emphatic finish on 72 minutes.
