GILLINGHAM VS. WALSALL: RECENT MEETINGS

12 April 2016

A thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Gillingham back on Halloween...

Ahead of tonight’s match against Gillingham, we take a look back at the Saddlers’ last five matches against the Gills…

31st October 2015 – Walsall 3-2 Gillingham – League One

Jason Demetriou's stoppage-time winner sent Walsall top of League One after a thrilling comeback victory over former leaders Gillingham. Cody McDonald's cool finish and Bradley Dack's penalty gave the Gills a commanding two-goal advantage after 32 minutes. But the hosts staged a stirring fightback, with quick-fire strikes from Kieron Morris and Milan Lalkovic making it 2-2 before the break. And Demetriou sealed a dramatic win when he volleyed home his first Saddlers goal in added time.

1st February 2015 – Walsall 1-1 Gillingham – League One
Substitute Ashley Grimes scored his first goal in Walsall colours to earn the Saddlers a point against managerless Gillingham. Walsall dominated the first half but fell behind on 69 minutes when Bradley Dack calmly slotted past Richard O’Donnell. Grimes bundled home Walsall’s leveller five minutes later and Romaine Sawyers wasted a good opportunity to seal victory late on.

20th September 2014 – Gillingham 0-0 Walsall – League One
Walsall responded to a heavy defeat at Rochdale by picking up a hard-fought point at the Priestfield Stadium. The Saddlers, who lost 4-0 against the Dale, went closest to finding a winner when Ashley Grimes sliced wide from close range. James Baxendale also headed wide in a game of few chances as Walsall were held to their fourth goalless draw of the campaign.

21st April 2014 - Walsall 1-1 Gillingham – League One
Cody McDonald scored his 16th goal of a prolific season to rescue Gillingham a point. Febian Brandy's right-footed finish put Walsall ahead shortly after half-time, and Craig Westcarr went close to making it 2-0 when his 25-yard drive struck the post. But the Saddlers had to settle for a draw as McDonald drilled home from Adebayo Akinfenwa’s lay off with six minutes remaining.

29th December 2013 – Gillingham 2-2 Walsall – League One
An injury-time equaliser from Cody McDonald denied Walsall victory at Gillingham. The ex-Coventry striker put the hosts ahead with a stunning overhead kick just 21 seconds into the second-half, but Romaine Sawyers levelled on the hour-mark. Julian Gray’s 90th-minute strike looked to have won it for the Saddlers, only for McDonald to equalise in the second minute of added time.
