WALSALL VS. CHELSEA: HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD

23 September 2015

Unsurprisingly, it's been quite a while since we last played each other...

WALSALL last hosted Chelsea on 23rd September 1992 - exactly 23 years ago today.

Dennis Wise, Eddie Newton and Andy Townsend scored the Blues’ goals in a comfortable 3-0 League Cup win at the Banks’s (then known solely as the Bescot).

A fortnight later, Robert Fleck scored the only goal in the second leg - sealing a 4-0 aggregate success.

The two sides have met four other times in this competition.

In 1984/85, Walsall held Chelsea to a 2-2 draw at our old Fellows Park ground, before succumbing to a 3-0 reverse in the return leg.

The pair were drawn together again in 1990/91. Chelsea, a top-flight outfit, coasted to a 5-0 victory at the newly-opened Bescot Stadium in the first match, and won 4-1 in the second to complete a 9-1 aggregate scoreline.

The Saddlers’ only victory in 11 attempts against Chelsea came on 30th March 1963 – a 1-0 win in an old Second Division match at Stamford Bridge.

Let’s hope for more of the latter this evening!
