PRIME ROLE FOR PAUL

8 May 2015

New deal is right up Downing's street...

THE SADDLERS have agreed a one-year contract extension with Paul Downing.

The central defender joined the club in the summer of 2012 from West Bromwich Albion and has progressed well since then to establish himself amongst the back-line during the course of over 125 outings.

The 23 year-old, who was appointed vice-captain at the start of the campaign, made a total of 45 appearances in all competitions this term.

“I am delighted to be going into my fourth season with the club,” he said. “I thoroughly enjoy it here and feel that I am progressing as a player and as a person all of the time.

“Last season was decent with a Wembley appearance and some good performances. There is always room for improvement and I am determined to really kick-on from here.

“I feel that the number of games I have played for a young player will really stand me in good stead and I have benefitted from the experience of being vice-captain where I’d like to think that I have been a positive influence on those around me and helped to lead the group.

“I am proud of the number of clean sheets we kept this season and if we can carry that into next year, it will give us a solid base on which to build from.

“It’s going to be another tough League, but there are plenty of games to look forward to and I know that on our day, we can give anyone a game at this level.

“There are a lot of positives to look back on from this season; the Wembley journey was fantastic and something that we’ll all remember for the rest of our lives. The hope now is we can create more memories and get into that top half of the table.

“I am pleased to be part of it.”
