Boss on iron test...
IT'S BEEN quite a week as we responded to our 2-0 home set-back at the hands of Coventry City last weekend in the best possible way with a deserved victory at Preston North End on Wednesday evening in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Northern Area Final first leg.I was pleased with the way in which we started the game at Deepdale; however, our hosts came into as the first half progressed and we had Richard O’Donnell to thank for a couple of important saves to keep us on level terms.
We went on to show what we are all about after the break, winning more second balls and seeing our hard work and endeavour rewarded with two good goals.
The character of the team really came to the fore; I have a group of players here who will stand up and be counted. We’re a fit team who move the ball well and we know that we are always going to create chances late on in games.
This is a big opportunity for us now, but we know that it is only half-time in the tie and we will have to be at our best in the second leg.
The result gives us a fighting chance, but we have to put it on the back-burner for the time being as there is important League business for us to focus on, starting on Saturday with the visit of Scunthorpe United.
They have a good squad of players at their disposal and their fortunes have started to improve under the guidance of Mark Robins and ‘Ned’ Kelly.
As far as we are concerned, there is a need for us to start getting back into winning ways on home soil after two successive defeats, and we have worked hard over the past couple of days in preparation for this game.
I must say that our supporters were absolutely outstanding at Deepdale on Wednesday. They made themselves heard throughout and the backing that they gave us was much appreciated by the players and I.
Let’s have more of the same on Saturday. There is plenty for us to look forward to, and by working together we can achieve our objectives.
