Midfield man returns from International Duty full of confidence...SADDLERS' midfielder, Romaine Sawyers, has returned to the club after a successful Caribbean Cup campaign with St.Kitts and Nevis.
The 22 year-old helped the Sugarboyz secure qualification to the next round of the competition, recording two wins and a draw from their three matches against Dominica, Guyana and St. Lucia.
“We went there to achieve qualification to the next round and we done that without conceding a goal which is always a huge positive,” he commented. "We always seem to have a ‘bigger’ side like Trinidad in our group so we tend to get overlooked. This time around we were the favourites so it was a different experience for all of us.
“The fact that we didn’t concede across all three games sends a statement of intent to the other Caribbean countries.
“At the other end we scored seven goals in three games so it has to go down as a really successful tournament for us.
“We want to be a force in this tournament and I think we sent out the perfect message."
Sawyers was on target in his side’s 5-0 thrashing of Dominica and revealed his relief at finally finding the back of the net.
“It’s my first of the season in all competitions so hopefully I can kick on now,” he added. “To be honest it was a moment of relief having not scored so far and it was playing on my mind a little over the past few weeks, so it was good to put that one behind me.”
Although his focus was fully on his International Duty, the British Kittian found time to follow The Saddlers' exploits from over four thousand miles away.
“I was actually keeping track of the lads through Saddlers Player,” he commented. “There’s five hours difference so I wasn’t playing when Walsall were. It was good to listen to how we were getting on.
“Now it’s all about Preston and hopefully I can play my part in securing that first win of the season. “
