Emerging 'keeper looking forward to latest challenge at Southport...

SADDLERS' young prospect, Liam Roberts, has joined Vanarama Conference Premier side, Southport, on loan until January.

The highly-rated goalkeeper has enjoyed first-team action at Rushall Olympic and more recently Rainworth MW and is now looking forward to the next step in his development.

“It’s an exciting time for me as a young goalkeeper,” smiled the 20-year old. “With the League and FA Cup games they’ve got coming up, I can’t wait to get going.

“Amadou is already there on loan so I’ll have a familiar face to help me settle in which will help.

The imposing stopper signed a new deal with the club in July and is keen to continue his progression at the highest level possible.

“I’ve obviously already been out on loan a couple of times this season and got some first-team experience, which was really important for me,” he added. “I just want to take that form onto Southport now.

“It’s going to be a good challenge for me with them being a couple of levels higher than Rainworth and one that I’m really looking forward to.

“People talk about the physical side of non-League football, but there are also a lot of technically gifted players as well.

“I just want to play games because you can prepare and train as much as you want but nothing beats match day.”

The youth team product stands by to make his debut for the Merseyside club at Lincoln City on Saturday.
