Chambers on our impressive defence record...
EXPERIENCED defender, James Chambers, insists that The Saddlers' impressive defensive record is down to a collective team effort.Dean Smith’s men secured our eighth clean sheet of the season in our 1-0 away victory over Fleetwood Town last weekend and Chambers is keen to share the praise.
“It would be unfair for the praise to fall solely on the back four and Rich [O’Donnell],” he said. “We do everything as a team. The guys upfront are always closing down and putting pressure on their defence.
“Our midfielders are cutting off angles and preventing balls going into the front-men and we just try to protect the goal and get in the way of any shots that come in.
“And even then when teams are fortunate enough to get through us, we’ve got a very good goalkeeper who has come up with some big saves already this season."
James Baxendale and Ashley Grimes were given starting berths last time out and Chambers has full confidence in whoever Dean Smith choses to line up against Coventry City on Saturday as we make only our second-ever visit to the Ricoh Arena.
“We’ve got a lot of good players with many different attributes so when the gaffer does make changes, there’s no real weakness in the team,” he added. “I think he’s got quite a headache at the moment trying to figure out who to go with!”
The Sky Blues secured their first away league win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Colchester United last week but the recently turned 34-year old believes The Saddlers have momentum on our side.
“We’re in a good run of form at the moment,” smiled Chambers. “We’re performing well and feel confident going into games.
“At the moment we’re getting the results to go with the performance so long may that continue.”
