Emerging full-back surprised to take Young Player of the Season crown...

EMERGING full-back, Mal Benning, fought off fierce competition to land the 2013/14 Young Player of the Season award.

The youth team product can reflect upon a campaign in which he notched the first senior goals of his career during the course of 18 outings in all competitions.

"It was a big surprise," admitted the marauding left-back. "There were some really worthy candidates, so to come out on top is a real boost.

"I am delighted to win this award; it means a lot to me and my family and I intend to build on this.

"There have been highs and lows for me personally and the team as a whole this season. I am pleased to have scored the first two goals of my career this season and feel that generally I have made progress.

"I know that there are areas of my game that need work, but I am prepared to knuckle down and put the effort in.

"As a full-back I like to get forward at every opportunity and feel that my energy and hunger fits in to what the Gaffer is trying to achieve here."
