Former Saddlers' goalkeeper passes away...

WE ARE sad to report the passing of former Saddlers’ goalkeeper, John Christie, at the age of 84.

Joining Walsall in the summer of 1959, he went on to appear in 107 senior games for the club, during which time he helped us gain successive promotions in 1959/60 and 1960/61.

A popular and reliable last line of defence, he began his playing career with Ayr United in his native Scotland before moving to Southampton, for whom he played over 200 times.

He was still living down in Hampshire at the time of his death, but kept in regular contact with the goings on here at Banks’s Stadium.

Everyone here at Walsall Football Club would like to pass on our sincere condolences to his family and friends at this sad time.

John was a real gentlemen and one of the finest custodians to serve the club. His funeral will take place at St. Boniface Church in Chandler’s Ford, Eastleigh, Hampshire. The date is yet to be confirmed.
