Saddlers beside the seaside in the first round of the Capital One Cup...
THE SADDLERS have been handed an away tie beside the seaside in the first round of the Capital One Cup as we take on Southend United. It will be our first trip to Roots Hall since March 2010 when we came out on the wrong end of a 3-0 defeat.
The Shrimpers finished fifth in League Two last term but fell at the play-off hurdle.
Former Saddler, Kevan Hurst, was a regular in the team and ended the campaign with 12 goals to his name in all competitions, whilst former Walsall youngster, Julian Bennett, and loanee, Marc Laird, were also part of Phil Brown’s squad.
“It’s a tough draw,” admitted Saddlers’ boss, Dean Smith. “Southend did well last season and finished in the top five of League Two before missing out on promotion in the play-offs.
“It will be a long journey, but we will approach the tie in a positive frame of mind and be determined to get the right result and make progress in this competition.”
The tie will be played in the week commencing August 11th. The date and admission details will be confirmed in due course.
