PLATFORM FOR MANTOM

24 January 2014

Midfield man building on success...

HAVING stretched our current unbeaten run to five games and in the process halted Brentford's sequence of consecutive wins, midfield man, Sam Mantom, is eyeing a place in the play-offs.

The Saddlers currently sit just one place and two points out of the top six as we prepare for a run of three games during the week ahead, starting with Saturday's trip to Notts County.

"I would say that realistically there are two or three play-off places up for grabs," admitted Mantom. "We're five games unbeaten now and if we can do what we did at this stage last season, we will be there or thereabouts.

"We have to take it one game at a time and just continue doing the things that we know we are capable of.

"It's nice to know that teams are finding it hard to beat us; we're resolute and difficult to break down, so that gives us a platform.

"Saturday's game will be tough. We drew with them at home and they were hard to beat on that occasion. Shaun Derry was hard-working and a good tackler as a player and I expect his team to be set up the same way.

"It will be a good test for us and we are looking forward to it."

Mantom is reveling in his central midfield role alongside Adam Chambers. "I feed off Chambo," he added. "We've developed a good partnership and we work well together.

"If I can keep getting the shots off and nick the odd goal, I will be the player that I want to be.

"It's nice to be part of this team and be up there challenging."
