CHAMBERS BREAKS LEAGUE SCORING DUCK

3 January 2014

Joy as James Chambers gets off the mark...

NOT ONLY was James Chambers' goal on Wednesday his first in a Walsall shirt, it was also the first League goal of a senior career that stretches back 14 years.

“I’ve scored a couple in a League Cup tie for Watford and one in a play-off game – although I’m not sure that went down as mine – but it was my first League goal," he admitted. "With it being the winner and having been out of the side the last few games, it’s come at a good time.

“To be honest it was a difficult start to the game. They came out very quick in the opening quarter-of-an-hour or so and it took a while for us to get a grip on the game.

"We controlled it a little bit after that, though, but didn’t get as much penetration in the final third as we would have hoped. But in the second half we managed to turn that possession into chances and luckily we got the winner.

“I’ve had a bit of a laugh with one of the lads who’s been saying I keep getting closer to scoring – the last game I played against Port Vale I hit one from about 40 yards that the 'keeper pushed around the post. So I didn’t think it was going to come but it was a great move.

"Pass and move is something we obviously work on in training and it’s come to fruition on the pitch. Luckily it was me on the end of it!

"We've got a bit of a break now before the matches come thick and fast again and hopefully we can take this into our next game."
