Capital One Cup takes us to Southend this evening...THE SADDLERS turn our attention to Capital One Cup business on Tuesday evening as we make the long journey down to Southend United (kick-off 7.45pm).
It will be our first visit to Roots Hall since March 2010 as we face a Shrimpers' side that came close to promotion from League Two last year as they fell at the play-off hurdle.
They will include former Saddler, Kevan Hurst, in their ranks and he helped them to an opening day 1-0 victory at Accrington Stanley courtesy of a late Lee Barnard penalty.
For The Saddlers, Billy Clifford, will be pushing for his first start for the club having come off the bench in the 1-1 draw at Port Vale on Saturday. Ironically, this will be the second season in succession that Clifford has faced Southend in the first round of this competition having lined up against them for Yeovil Town 12 months ago.
Ben Purkiss and Jordan Cook remain sidelined with Sam Mantom closing in on a return to action following a knee injury, whilst Tom Bradshaw and Ashley Grimes will be looking to build upon lively debuts for the club.
"We're looking forward to the game," said manager, Dean Smith. "We want to progress and have a good run in this competition.
"It's not an easy journey as we come up against a good side who did well in League Two last season, but we will be looking to build upon our display at the weekend.
"We go into the tie with plenty of confidence and hopefully our name will be in the hat for the draw for the next round."
Ticket prices will be as follows:
If you are unable to make it along to the game, fear not as Saddlers Player will have live, full match commentary. There will also be a Live Blog via Saddlers Wall.
