HARD-EARNED WIN FOR YOUNGSTERS

18 August 2014

Youth team overcome Shrews...

THE SADDLERS' youth team battled out a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town at the weekend as Levi Rowley grabbed the all-important goal.

"It was a keenly-contested and competitive encounter between two strong sides," said Academy Manager, Neil Woods. "We took control of possession early on, playing some good football in three-quarters of the pitch.

"We lacked a bit of creativity in the final third, but some of our movement of the ball was excellent.

"It was goalless at half-time and we were disappointed with the scoreline considering the amount of controlled possession that we had.

"The second period saw us continue to have good control of possession and we eventually got our reward when Tevin Shakespeare did well to carve out an opening for Levi Rowley, who applied the finish.

"We went on to create a number of chances after that but, fair play to Shrewsbury, they kept us under pressure and we managed to hold firm defensively to secure the three points."

WALSALL: Jezeph, Ottley, Probert, Sangha, K. Rowley, R. Smith, Delaney, Kouhymar, Reid (Shakespeare), L. Rowley, Pooni (Oliver). Subs not used: J. Smith, Owen, Lewis.

The youth team head to Grimsby Town on Wednesday evening in the first round of the Midland Youth Cup (kick-off 7.00pm).
