Goalless draw for youth team at Wigan...

THE SADDLERS' youth team played out a goalless draw at a blustery Wigan Athletic.

"Our early tempo was below that of previous games," admitted Academy Manager, Neil Woods. "We have to give Wigan respect for how organised they were as it meant that for large periods in the first half, we were unable to get a foot-hold in the game.

"The longer the game went on, the more dangerous we became, with Carlton McKenzie a threat out wide.

"We missed a couple of good opportunities during the opening period and also had an effort rules out for offside.

"It was a good mental test for the lads because they were frustrated at not being able to make the breakthrough, but we kept plugging away and found ourselves in the ascendancy for much of the second half.

"Wigan had their goalkeeper sent off for deliberate handball outside his area and after that we hit the bar and had countless goalmouth scrambles, but still the ball wouldn't go in for us.

"We lost some composure in the closing stages and didn't do enough to break the deadlock."

WALSALL: Jones, Ashmore, Henry, Kinsella, K. Rowley, Christopherou, McKenzie, Delaney (Dallison), Bakayoko (R. Reid), Rush, A. Reid (Shakespeare). Subs not used: Lovett, Probert.
