SMITH ON SHOOT-OUT HEARTBREAK

3 September 2013

Boss reflects on Wolves JPT clash...

THE SADDLERS suffered penalty shoot-out heartbreak at Molineux in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Goals from Ashley Hemmings against his former club and a first for Troy Hewitt saw us level twice as we ended the game well on top, but in the end we suffered a 4-2 defeat in the shoot-out.

“We sat too deep in the first half,” admitted manager, Dean Smith. “You can’t afford to do that against quality opposition, but after the break we played higher up the pitch and were the main aggressors.

“Had the game gone into extra-time, we would have won such was our momentum.

“The lads were disappointed with the penalty that went against us and then we were denied a spot-kick of our own soon afterwards.

“We gave our supporters, who were excellent throughout, something to shout about and we’re looking forward to the League game here later this month now.

“We have a strong beliefs here as to how the game should be played and whilst it is nice to get the plaudits, we are winners and want to win.

“I felt that we gave it a right good go tonight and we’ll take the positives and build on them.”
