WIN FOR RESERVES

15 October 2013

Four victories in a row for second-string...

THE SADDLERS’ second-string ran out 3-1 winners at Shrewsbury Town to secure our fourth Central League West Division victory in a row.

“We did well in the opening exchanges,” admitted reserve team boss, Richard O’Kelly. “We got an early goal through Troy Hewitt and our understanding of when to press and when to play warranted an eight and-a-half out of ten.

“We broke lines and also created opportunities, but my one criticism was that we didn’t take our chances.

“To be fair to our hosts, they came at us in the early exchanges of the second half and managed to get back on level terms.

“But we came through it and started to get a hold of the game once more. With around 20 minutes to go, Mal Benning, who was superb all afternoon, did well to find Hewitt who in turn linked up with Romaine Sawyers and he made no mistake to make it 2-1.

“As the clock ticked down, substitute, Aris Christopherou put in a great ball for Kieron Morris to seal the victory.

“It was a decent performance and a good work-out for the lads. We set our standards and there were some good performances all over the park with Mal Benning doing particularly well.”

WALSALL: Lewis, Purkiss (Christopherou), Benning, Holden, Preston, George, McQuilkin, Sawyers (Bakayoko), Hewitt, Gray (Kinsella), Morris. Sub not used: Jones.
