GETHIN HERE AHEAD OF MAIDEN DEFENCE

30 October 2013

Local boxer takes time out from busy schedule to see The Saddlers...

MARTIN Gethin visited his beloved Walsall FC on Saturday as he steps up preparations ahead of his first defence of the British Lightweight title next month.

The 29 year-old takes on Anthony Crolla on Saturday, 23rd November on the undercard of Carl Froch’s WBA and IBF Super Middleweight title showdown with George Groves at an already sold-out Phones 4u Arena Manchester.

On Saturday, the ‘Quiet Man’ watched The Saddlers slip to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of local rivals Coventry City and was on hand at half-time to present members of our Academy with their Player of the Month Certificates.

Despite the result, Gethin enjoyed his afternoon at the Banks’s Stadium and is eager to ensure that the Lord Lonsdale belt stays in Walsall.

“I always enjoy watching my team play,” he said. “I’m friends with a lot of people at the club, so it’s like a home from home for me.

“It’s nice to give a little back by coming along and handing out certificates and hopefully the kids enjoy it as much as I do.

“It’s a nice break from the rigors of training too. I’ve been working hard in the gym, getting ready for Crolla. Training is going well and I’m feeling sharp. We’re still a month away from fight night so there’s a long road ahead but I’m well on my way.”
