THE MAN who took over as Saddlers’ Chief Executive from Roy Whalley during the summer of 2010 has paid a glowing tribute to a ‘fantastic mentor and friend’.Stefan Gamble was previously Financial Director at Banks’s Stadium before stepping up to his current role.
“Today marks the end of an era,” he said on Roy’s final day as a full-time employee.”Since my arrival at the club back in 2002, Roy has been a permanent fixture and for me personally a fantastic mentor and friend, especially three years ago when I stepped into his shoes as Chief Executive.
“There have been some great highs during this time as well as the odd low, but throughout it all one of Roy's most redeeming qualities has been his eternal optimism and faith that come 5pm on a Saturday we would have three points in the bag!
“Roy is a true Saddler through and through and I'm delighted that he has decided to stay on as a Director as his vast experience and advice will always be sought and gratefully accepted.
“Throughout his tenure the club has grown and developed immeasurably. His legacy should not be underestimated and he leaves the Commercial arm of the business behind him in a very healthy state.
“Along with the other board members, Roy oversaw what was arguably the greatest period in the club's long history with the team enjoying four out of five seasons in what is now The Championship at the turn of the century.
“He will remain a familiar face at the Banks's Stadium for years to come and I would personally like to thank him and wish him all the best for the future as he enters the next phase of his life.”
