ROY RETIRES: DEAN SMITH

31 May 2013

The thoughts of the manager...

WHEN manager, Dean Smith, first arrived at the club as a player back in 1987, one of the first faces that he saw was that of Roy Whalley.

Today marks the end of an era as Roy retires after 27 years at the club.

“Roy was the Club Secretary was I first joined the club as a teenager and I can remember meeting him to sign all the paperwork,” recalled Smith fondly. “He has worked tirelessly over the years and that infectious hunger and enthusiasm for the club is still as strong today as it has always been.

“All that is right with the club has a lot to do with Roy. He has certainly put the hours in over the years and deserves a tremendous amount of praise and respect for this.

“He will be sorely missed by everyone at the club, but I know that he will remain a regular face here on matchdays because he is a lifelong supporter of the club whose passion for The Saddlers runs deep.

“The players and I wish him well in his retirement.”
