YOUNGSTERS START WITH A WIN

Youth team beat Bury...

THE SADDLERS opened their League campaign with a 2-0 victory at Bury.

"It was a scrappy first half in which we struggled to get a hold of the game," admitted Academy Manager, Neil Woods. "But we were gifted an opportunity in the 25th minute which we were able to capitalise upon as Amadou Bakayoko found the net to give us the lead.

"The quality from both sides during the opening period was poor; their were mistakes from both teams as we failed to get control of the ball as we would like.

"Richard Jones made some good saves to keep us in front going into the interval and then we came out for the second half and looked brighter for the opening ten or 15 minutes as we hit the bar and post twice.

"We still looked vulnerable on the counter-attack, however, we were able to double our advantage when Jordan Garner found the net following a free-kick.

"I felt that we just edged the game, but the quality and consistency of our play needs work. That said, we know where we're at and it's always nice to be able to correct errors from a winning position."

WALSALL: Jones, Christopherou, Garner, Dallison, K. Rowley, Henry, Rush, Kinsella, McKenzie (Ashmore), Reid, Bakayoko (Shakespeare). Subs not used: Lovett, L. Rowley, Probert.
