Reserves go down fighting...

THE SADDLERS' reserves went down to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Tranmere Rovers in our opening Central League West Division game as we played some good football.

"The lads were magnificent," said reserve team boss, Richard O'Kelly. "They tried to do things the right way and dominated for long periods, however, our hosts were in stubborn mood and defended well.

"We fell behind to a goal on the break-away, but refused to let our heads drop and the attitude from everyone was first-class.

"Tranmere doubled their advantage but we continued to pass the ball around and managed to pull a goal back with ten minutes to go through Kieron Morris after Ben Purkiss' effort had hit the woodwork.

"In the end we couldn't find an equaliser but that should not take away from what was a good performance."

WALSALL: Lewis, George, Heath, Holden, Purkiss, Featherstone (Kinsella 65), McQuilkin, Flanagan, Morris, Sawyers (Henry 65), Griffiths. Subs: Kinsella, Roberts, Henry.
