Emerging youngster targets regular place and Cup run...
RISING star, Mal Benning, is ready to do battle for a starting place. The 19 year-old youth team product made a solid start to the new campaign in Saturday's 3-1 victory over Tranmere Rovers as he came in for the injured Andy Taylor.
"It will be a hard battle with Andy," he admitted. "He's a good and experienced professional, but I am ready for the challenge and we'll see what happens.
"It's up to me to keep working hard and doing the right things. I feel fitter and stronger this year and I'm determined to progress and keep my place in the team.
"It was good to get off to a winning start at the weekend. It was a great team performance and we've set the standard now."
This evening we turn our attentions to Capital One Cup matters with a first round trip to a Port Vale side who gained promotion from League Two at the end of last term and started with a draw against Brentford on Saturday.
"Port Vale are a good team," added Benning. "They have strength and pace, but if we perform like we did in our last game, we will progress.
"We played them last season in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and lost on penalties, so we'll be looking to make amends for that this evening."
