YOUNGSTERS GET THEIR REWARD

23 October 2012

Youth team win at Tranmere...

THE SADDLERS' youth team ran out worthy 2-1 winners at Tranmere Rovers.

"On a very heavy pitch, we started brightly and forced their 'keeper into a number of early saves," said Academy Manager, Neil Woods. "We also hit the crossbar before, against the run of play, Tranmere opened the scoring.

"Our football became somewhat patchy for the remainder of the first half and during the interval we emphasised the need for us to be more controlled on the ball.

"The lads took on board what was said and tightened up in the second period. We deservedly got back on level terms on 65 minutes when Alex Reid linked up with Danny Griffiths who made no mistake.

"For the next 25 minutes we were in total control; we moved the ball well and it was just a case of whether we would get the goal that our pressure deserved.

"It finally came with just a couple of minutes remaining as Jacob Hobbis crossed well for Griffiths to notch his second goal with a diving header.

"It was just reward for our performance, albeit we were not at our best. The lads showed character and kept going until the very end."

WALSALL: R. Jones, Kinsella (Ashmore), Williams, Sinton, Christopherou, Preston, Hobbis, Heath, Griffiths, Flanagan (Rush), Reid (McKenzie). Subs not used: Bakayoko, Garner.
