Cup win for youth team...

THE SADDLERS' youth team made progress in The Football League Youth Alliance Cup with a deserved 1-0 victory at Chesterfield.

"We started brightly and but for a number of outstanding saves from the home 'keeper, we could have been two or three goals to the good early on," said Academy Manager, Neil Woods. "I was pleased with the football we played; we created plenty of chances and looked good.

"Having been bright and inventive for much of the opening period, Chesterfield had a ten-minute spell just before half-time.

"During the interval I told the lads to keep believing and keep doing the things we had done well in the opening period and we came out with purpose at the start of the second half.

"Within five minutes of the restart we got our noses in front when Reece Flanagan did well to set up Danny Griffiths who found the net.

"We continued on top after the goal but failed to add to our tally and this meant that we had a nervy ending as our hosts pushed for an equaliser, but Matt Preston marshalled his defence really well and they stood firm to secure our passage into the next round of the competition.

"It was the correct result; we were the better side on the day but we need to be able to take our chances."

WALSALL: Jones, Sinton, Christopherou, Heath, Dallison, Preston, Hobbis, Flanagan, Griffiths, Reid (Williams), McKenzie (Kinsella). Subs not used: Garner, Bakayoko, Roberts.

Youth team goalkeeper, Liam Roberts has gone on a work experience loan to Evo-Stik League Division One South outfit, Romulus.
