SADDLERS OVERCOME CHASETOWN

23 August 2012

Youth team run out winners in Midland Youth Cup...

THE SADDLERS' youth team were made to work hard to overcome the challenge of Chasetown in the Midland Youth Cup first round.

"Full credit to Chasetown as they came and tried to play the right way," said Head of Youth, Neil Woods. "It was a different game mentally for most of our lads because we don't play in many games where we are expected to win and also it was on the main Banks's Stadium pitch.

"It proved to be a good eye-opener for some of them as our opponents caused us a few problems. We were never really in control during the first half; Jordan Garner scored our opening goal but we went in at the break level at 1-1.

"We managed to get hold of the game better after the break, particularly in midfield, and it was a case of how many of our chances we could convert.

"In the end Reece Flanagan and then Danny Griffiths sealed the win with further goals to make it 3-1.

"Overall I was fairly pleased with how we fought out the victory."

WALSALL: Jones, Christopherou, Williams, Flanagan, Preston, Garner, Hobbis (Dallison), Heath, Griffiths, Reid (Rush), McKenzie. Subs not used: Ashmore, Sinton, Lovett.

This season, the first round of the Midland Youth Cup takes a 'round robin' format and we now face a trip to Burton Albion on a date yet to be finalised.
