Preview: Walsall v Salford City

4 October 2019

Walsall will be aiming to pick up their fifth consecutive win in all competitions when they take on Salford City at the Banks’s Stadium this afternoon.

The Saddlers picked up 10 points in September and will looking to take their positive form into October, starting with newly promoted Salford who are still finding their feet in the EFL.

Walsall are 14th, just three points off the play-offs while the Ammies are 18th in League Two.

Striker Rory Gaffney is ineligible as he is on-loan from Salford.

Kory Roberts made his long awaited return from injury against Southampton Under 21s in midweek.

Salford boss Graham Alexander has no fresh injury concerns.

The Saddlers have won four in a row in all competitions, losing just one of their last six.

Salford have won just one of their last 10 league games and are yet to win away from home.

Darrell Clarke: "We want to keep the momentum.

"How many times has this club, or any club in League One, League Two, won five games on the spin, you'll probably see one in eight, nine years maybe.

"We know it's very difficult to string wins together but that's what we'll be aiming to do.”

Graham Alexander: “It’s been a difficult little period for us the last couple of weeks and after the first couple of days analysing the game to see where we can improve, we want to put that into action and that’s what we’ve been trying to do this week. It’s only when you get to the games when you realise if you’ve made those improvements.

Match Report: Walsall 0-3 Salford

5 October 2019

Walsall’s winning run came to an end after they were comprehensively beaten by Salford City at the Banks’s Stadium.

Goals from Luke Armstrong, Jake Jervis and Ibou Touray sealed the victory for the visitors on a disappointing afternoon for the Saddlers.

Darrell Clarke made two changes to the team that started against Crawley Town.

Rory Gaffney was ineligible and couldn't face his parent club while Gary Liddle also came in for Danny Guthrie in midfield.

The Saddlers made a good start and forced an early save from Kyle Letheren after Elijah Adebayo’s towering header was tipped over the bar.

It was the visitors though who got their noses in front on 21 minutes when Armstrong stroked the ball into the bottom corner.

Walsall responded fairly well to going a goal down. Josh Gordon had a shot stopped while James Clarke and Wes McDonald both had opportunities.

Adebayo came close with a volley five minutes before half time but a deflection just took it wide.

Walsall made the worse possible start to the second half as Salford doubled their lead on 49 minutes.

Armstrong had a shot beaten away by Roberts but the ball fell to Jervis who slotted it into the bottom corner.

Walsall had a couple of decent chances midway through the second half. Substitute Alfie Bates’ low free-kick was pushed away by Letheren while Gordon struck the post with a powerful strike from 25-yards.

The game was soon taken away from Walsall when Salford left-back Touray’s powerful low-drive beat Liam Roberts and found the back of the net.

Walsall had plenty of possession but couldn’t find a consolation goal.

Roberts; Clarke, Scarr, Sadler (Bates), Jules (C. Mollett); McDonald (Hardy), Sinclair, Liddle, Holden, Adebayo, Gordon.
