Match report: Walsall 3-2 Northampton

15 February 2020

Rory Holden scored a dramatic 93rd minute winner as the Saddlers came from behind to beat Northampton Town.

Callum Morton scored twice as the visitors raced into a 2-0 lead in the first half before Josh Gordon and substitute Danny Guthrie netted to bring the hosts level.

The Saddlers pushed for a winner and Holden picked the perfect time bag his first Walsall goal with just a minute left of stoppage time.

Darrell Clarke made three changes to the team that drew with Newport County on Tuesday.

Stuart Sinclair, Shay Facey and Elijah Adebayo came into the side in place of Danny Guthrie, Cameron Norman and Caolan Lavery.

Northampton made a bright start and came close after just seven minutes when the ball was played over the top to Morton who was through on goal but his effort floated over the bar.

Morton made no mistake with his second chance though as on 22 minutes he gave the visitors the lead when he guided Nicky Adams’ cross into the back of the net.

The Saddlers struggled to get a foothold in the game and the Cobblers doubled their lead six minutes before half time when Morton netted his second when he prodded home Paul Anderson’s cross.

Walsall responded well in the second half and pulled one back on 55 minutes when Gordon headed in Shay Facey’s cross.

Clarke made a double change after the goal, introducing Danny Guthrie and Wes McDonald in place of Zak Jules and Nathan Sheron.

The Saddlers had Liam Roberts to thank on 71 minutes when he got down low to push Morton’s curling effort behind.

Six minutes later, Clarke’s men drew level when Guthrie’s free-kick from the left curled straight into the far corner.

The Saddlers turned the screw and put the visitors under pressure. They missed a glorious chance on 87 minutes when Holden pulled it back to McDonald who blazed over from close range.

Walsall made their pressure count and won it in the 93rd minute after McDonald found Holden in the area who swept the ball home to seal the three points.

Roberts; Facey, Sadler, Scarr, Jules (McDonald), Pring; Kinsella, Sheron (Guthrie), Sinclair (Holden); Gordon, Adebayo
