Walsall 0-1 AFC Wimbledon

12 February 2019

It was a disappointing evening at the Banks’s Stadium for Dean Keates’ side as they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of AFC Wimbledon.

In the first half, it was the visitors who threatened throughout as Liam Roberts was called into action on numerous occasions.

Six minutes in and Roberts made his first big save as Anthony Wordsworth whipped a free-kick round the Saddlers wall but the 24-year-old got across well to tip the effort around the post.

After 22 minutes, Roberts was called upon once more, this time to deny Michael Folivi. The striker turned Jon Guthrie smartly on the edge of the box but again the Wimbledon man was denied by a superb low save from Roberts, with Wordsworth scuffing the follow up effort.

Five minutes later and the Saddlers registered their first notable effort on goal. Joe Edwards curled a free-kick to the back post and top scorer Andy Cook rose highest but his header could only find the side-netting.

On the stroke of half-time, Guthrie was denied well by Aaron Ramsdale in the Wimbledon goal as he turned well in the box following a corner, only to see his effort parried behind.

Just three minutes into the second half and the visitors took the lead. Roberts again was in action but his superb double save wasn’t backed up by his defence as Steve Seddon tapped the ball into an empty net.

Moments later and it could have been even worse for the Saddlers as Joe Pigott was found unmarked 12 yards out but his effort could only find the inside of the right post before it was cleared by Cameron Norman.

Just before the hour-mark and Roberts was once again in action to deny Pigott as the towering striker hit one towards the bottom corner but the Saddlers stopper did well to parry it to safety.

On 65 minutes, the Saddlers had their best chance as substitute Matt Jarvis was found by Luke Leahy just on the edge of the box but the on-loan winger's effort was straight at Ramsdale.

Despite their best efforts, the Saddlers were unable to get back into the game.
