Match Reports

Coventry 3-0 Walsall

16 February 2019

The Saddlers suffered another disappointing defeat on the road as goals from Amadou Bakayoko, Jordy Hiwula and Bright Enobakhare secured Coventry City all three points.

It was a slow start from both sides as it took until the 24th minute for either side to register a meaningful effort on target.

After good work on the left from the home side, the ball was moved into captain Liam Kelly in the middle and his deflected effort was brilliantly tipped round the post by Liam Roberts.

Five minutes later and the Sky Blues went on the attack once more but this time down the right and they got their reward for a period of pressure when right-back Dujon Sterling found Bakayoko with a cross and the unmarked striker nodded past Roberts.

In the 37th minute, Coventry doubled their lead through Hiwula. After there was a coming together on the left between the striker and Jack Fitzwater, the striker latched onto the loose ball before driving into the area and finishing low underneath Roberts.

Into the second half and Roberts was once again the far busier of the two goalkeepers, with the Saddlers number one being called into action on a number of occasions throughout the second 45.

Tom Bayliss was the first Coventry player to be denied by Roberts in the second half when his curling effort was tipped round the post, an effort that looked destined for the top corner.

Just after the hour mark and Roberts pulled off another superb save, this time denying Hiwula his second of the game.

After racing onto a through ball from Bakayoko, Hiwula cut inside his man only for his powerful low drive to be kept out by a resilient Roberts.

With 65 minutes on the clock, Coventry thought they had a third, only for Roberts to be in the way once again.

This time round, Luke Thomas got on the outside of Scott Laird on the left but his curling effort was again saved by Roberts with another strong hand.

With just under 20 minutes left to play, the home side put the game out of sight when Enobakhare converted from the penalty spot after Fitzwater had tripped him.

There were just under 10 minutes left to play when Roberts was called upon once more, this time to deny substitute Conor Chaplin, who’s stinging effort from the edge of the area was dealt with well by Roberts as he got down well to his left.
