THIS evening we are able to turn our attentions to Johnstone's Paint Trophy matters as we play host to Chesterfield.
Looking back at Saturday's defeat at Brighton, I was pleased with the way in which we went about our job in the first half. The game was quite tactical, but we dealt with it well and created some decent chances.
I felt that we should have gone in at the break in front and we continued to work hard in the opening exchanges of the second period, however, the dismissal of Alex Nicholls changed the course of the game. Alex has held his hands up and admitted that he kicked out and he knows you can't do that. Hopefully he will learn from his mistake.
We were still very much in the game at that stage, so overall I am disappointed with the way in which things eventually panned out.
On a positive note it was nice to see Jon Macken come on for his debut and score. He is a quality finisher who will only get better the fitter he becomes and I am delighted to have him on board.
Tonight we target cup progress. Everyone wants to do well in the cup competitions and a prolonged run can help in so many different ways. With a Wembley Final at the end of it, we will be going all out to make it into the second round this evening.
Similarly Chesterfield will be thinking exactly the same. They have had a bright start to the season and with the move to their new stadium, there will be a positive vibe around the club right now.
It is sure to be a tough test for us tonight, but we have worked hard on our preparations over the past couple of days and face the challenge with relish and determination.
I would like to thank those supporters who made the long trip down to Brighton at the weekend. You gave us good backing and I am looking for more of the same this evening.
